[slideshow]There’s something strange I just can’t quite place going on in the Education Department this morning.  It’s like something remembered from a dream… I can’t quite place it… it’s… it’s… Oh, right, it’s silence. It’s been a while…  and it’s been amazing: there’s nothing like the surge of energy in our department in May and June! For the past two months, every morning’s seen another yellow bus (or two, or three!) rolling into our parking lot, pulsing with the excitement of kids on their end-of-year school trip. And on many an evening too – it’s a popular time of year for schools and Scouting/Guiding groups to come for our Voyageur Overnight program.   And we hosted 5 birthday parties!  And headed out on the river with the Katarowki Aboriginal School for our on-the-water Voyageur canoe program! Oh yes, and we’ve been getting our Education Programs out on the road too: animators Jen and Claire Burnard took our Bark, Skin and Cedar program to the Peterborough Children’s Water Festival; animator Kelly Pineault and volunteer Margaret Hughes took the Museum to Roger Neilson’s “Amazing Race” fundraiser, and just this week, Carolyn Hyslop and Stacey Reynolds took the Prince of Wales Outers Club tripping in the Kawartha Highlands (watch for Carolyn’s blog post about the trip).  With over a 1250 school and scouting visitors at the museum in May and June alone, and several hundred reached in our outreach activities, we haven’t had time for many pictures, but see above for a glimpse of the hands-on fun.

And now… did I say silence? Well, only for a moment, because now it’s time for CanoeKids Summer Camps!  We welcome Stacey Reynolds and Jeff Beer as our incredible new instructors – you may have met them on the docks if you came out for National Canoe Day in Peterborough.  ORCKA-certified paddle instructors, with all sorts of interesting canoe and leadership experience between them,  Stacey and Jeff have a fantastic CanoeKids camp season planned.  Our first week is sold out, but we still have a few spaces in weeks 2 through 6 for ages 10-14 to get their ORCKA certifications (level 1,2,3) and even go tripping (week 5).   Please visit here, or give us a call in the Education Department for more about our canoe camps!
