Discover the world of natural dyeing! Participants will work with all natural materials, from plants to bugs to minerals, and leave with the knowledge to continue dyeing at home with guidance from our expert instructor, Julie Sinden*. On the first day, students will learn about mordanting, preparing the dye-bath, and will dye their chosen fabrics. On the second day, unique dye techniques will be explored, such as Indigo dyeing and shibori. Some materials will be provided, but participants are strongly encouraged to bring whichever natural fibres they would like to work with. Suggested fabrics include cotton fabric, linen fabric, fleece and wool yarn- no synthetics, please! Students will leave with a small sample book of their creations to reference for future use.

* Julie Sinden began crafting at a very young age with the guidance from her mother and learned how to do everything from sewing, knitting and dyeing, to needlepoint and cross-stitch. She attended the Kootenany School of the Arts in British Columbia where she completed a three year textile program. Since then, Julie has used her skills and love of natural dyeing to create her own line of hats called Julie Sinden Handmade. She sells her creations through various boutiques and online stores, and at the Christmas One of a Kind Show in Toronto. Julie also teaches dyeing classes through The Workroom in Toronto and loves seeing the results of participants’ projects!
