Join us at The Canadian Canoe Museum for canoes and crafts this winter break! From December 27th to January 5th, our galleries will be filled with drop-in seasonal activities and crafts to make and take home, including mason jar snow globes, Northern Lights art, and more.Our drop-in activities are available thirty minutes after opening and up until thirty minutes before closing (Monday to Saturday, 10:30am-4:30pm; Thursday until 7:30pm; and Sunday, 12:30-4:30pm), and are free with admission or membership! If you want to make your own sturdy sheath to secure your beloved camping knife, this workshop is for you. Bring your own fixed blade knife (not a folder!) and make your own unique sheath to fit that favorite knife. We will learn some basic skills of leather crafting that you will be able to use and practice while designing and making your own sheath. The satisfaction of making something so practical and beautiful with your own hands is one great result of this workshop. Be careful because the craft is contagious!

Make a Wet-Felted Vessel

This workshop is an introduction to the wet felting technique. Begin with merino wool roving and create our own unique textile by adding water, soap and friction. Enjoy the day learning from a knowledgeable local artisan, Christianna Ferguson, and leave with your own one-of-a-kind felted vessel!

In this two-day workshop each participant will make their own crooked knife, beginning with a bar of tool steel and using readily available hand tools. You will learn about blade and handle design, shaping and heat-treating steel, attaching and shaping a handle, and sharpening the blade while crafting your own one-of-a-kind knife. Everyone will finish with a crooked knife made to comfortably fit their own hand.

Participants in the canoe restoration clinic will learn how to re-canvas a wood-and-canvas canoe and perform basic structural repairs (for example; replacing a rib, or repairing damaged planking) from experienced canoe builder, Joe Calnan. Learn the art of wood-burning in this fun and engaging workshop! The day will begin with a discussion of safety, materials, and how to use the wood-burning tool. Next, participants will practice using the different tips by making a small sampler.

Make a Coiled Basket with a Woodburned Insert

Join us for a hands-on class to learn both the basics of woodburning and making a coiled basket.

First, we'll discuss some of the materials and techniques used in making coiled baskets. Then, you'll learn the basics of woodburning (also known as pyrography) that will help you create a lovely insert for your basket on a basswood plaque. You'll be able to choose from a wide variety of simple designs featuring nature and wildlife. Next, we'll move on to making the coiled basket using fibre rush, twine, and a large darning needle. Coiling involves spiraling a coil outward and upward, stitching each new row to the previous one. After learning the basic techniques, you can personalize your project by choosing your own basket shape and even embellishing your project with beads or coloured string.
